Would they think, well? so what? or what would they think?

If that happened and all we Mamas died, and there was no one

doing our work,

well, the rain wouldn't fall from the sky.

It would get hotter and hotter from the sky,

and the trees wouldn't grow,

and the crops wouldn't grow.

Or am I wrong, and they would grow anyway?

The Mamas know that this process has begun. I still did not know how they knew, or what precisely had so frightened them, but the constant mention of water was obviously significant. Over and over again they warned of heat and drought, and the end of life. This is not a game: it is the most important thing in the world, for them and for us.

That night a group of Mamas came to see me. They spoke gravely, and very briefly.

`Our yes is yes. The Mamas do not speak with two tongues.’
